The case of Fátima Maytés, a 13-year-old girl thrown into the void for being a fan of K-pop, has caused alarm after evidence of the bullying she suffered in middle school came to light. It is unknown if any of her peers were involved in the tragic event. It was revealed that part of the harassment stemmed from Fátima liking a friend of the aggressors, who mistreated and mocked her.
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the Federal Education Authority in Mexico City requested psychological attention for Fátima due to her class absences and the mistreatment she endured. A letter signed by the school principal has been shown as a supportive measure against the bullying. It is expected that the aggressors will be prosecuted, despite being minors, for the violence that led to the tragedy.
Evidence of the harassment shows messages from one of the aggressor classmates detailing the supposed reasons why Fátima was a victim of bullying, in addition to her fandom for K-pop. Fátima's traits were described disparagingly, and she was accused of thinking she was superior, which triggered verbal and emotional attacks. The aggressor claimed that she tried to defend herself against Fátima in a previous incident, but the situation ended in tears and mutual accusations.
The K-pop community, Fátima's family, and society at large expect justice and concrete measures to prevent similar situations in the future. The teenager was thrown from the third floor by at least three students, highlighting the severity of the bullying that led to this tragedy.
